Vienna City Walk

Vienna City Walk

Something I very much like to do when I visit any new city is simply to have the opportunity to walk through it. On my first weekend in Vienna I did exactly this. I started in Westbahnhof a large train station near to where I am staying. From there I walked into the city centre and wandered around. I mostly was just looking at all the awesome buildings but I had a look inside a couple of the cathedrals.

Street in Vienna

I took this image as I was walking toward the city centre.

Natural History museum Vienna

This image is of the Natural History Museum. It's opposite another museum building that looks identical to this one and not too far away from the Hofburg.

Michaelerplatz

This is an image of Michaelerplatz. It was the first thing I saw after passing under a dome in the building behind me. While there is construction happening here I do love how the streets from this place go all in different directions, giving a sense that you could go anywhere from here.

plague column

There was this column statue thing. Looked pretty cool. I later learnt it is a memorial for the Great Plague in 1679.

St Stephen's Cathedral

I first saw the steeple for this church appear as I was walking down a street. As soon as I saw it I quickly made my way around the corner to get a proper look at this cathedral. This is St Stephen's Cathedral. It was quite majestic though in a really old way. I had the chance to walk inside, parts of it were open to the public.

I don't really know much about this church but I will have to learn more of its history at some point. It certainly felt like it was created as a central focus point designed to draw people in from all around.

Small street in Vienna

I loved some of the narrow streets that I found. I felt like they gave a great sense of mystery, like this is where the hidden treasures of the city might be discovered.

View from Danube Tower

I made my way to the Danube Tower where there was a viewing platform. Pictured here is the Danube river flowing by Vienna.

Garden bed with light

There was a nice little garden I walked past on my way back from the Danube Tower. This is perhaps my favourite picture of the day. I love how the light plays with the vegetation.
